Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Clinic
at Baan Lalisa Nursing Home
What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive technique that uses repetitive magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in order to modulate brain activity. It is a safe brain stimulation therapy with no side effects. Considering its benefits for our clients, Baan Lalisa Nursing Home has included this FDA-approved technology in our onsite TMS clinic. The TMS treatment is available for both inpatient and outpatient clients who require a non-surgical yet effective medical process for improving mood and treating various brain-based conditions such parkinson’s disease, stroke, dementia etc.
Who is suitable for TMS?
TMS is a non-invasive treatment for clients who suffer from neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, stroke, dementia, depression and migraine. We also use TMS to treat those who suffer from chronic pain in a specific part of the body. However, due to the magnetic waves produced during the procedure, clients with epilepsy and seizures, and those with any type of non-removable metal inside the brain such as implanted electrodes and microchips in certain areas of the body are not allowed to use TMS.

Why choose TMS as an alternative treatment?
One of the outstanding features of TMS is that it is a non-invasive treatment that does not require any incision or any supplemental medications. It was approved by the FDA in 2008 as a safe and well-tolerated method used to treat Parkinson’s disease, stroke, dementia and depression. Patients who undergo TMS therapy are assured to experience no side effects after the treatment. For these reasons, TMS is the best suitable alternative treatment for the elderly, patients and for those who do not respond to their medications or traditional treatments.
How is the TMS administered?
TMS treatment at our clinic is administered by TMS experts during the procedure. Once you are set in a comfortable position, a TMS-trained nurse will place an electromagnetic coil against your head which will painlessly deliver brief magnetic pulses – the same as those used in MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) machines – to the region of the brain. Due to TMS’ non-invasive procedure, you are awake and alert and can listen to music or relax during a TMS session. To reduce chronic pain, the TMS coil is placed around the specific areas of your body to deliver magnetic stimulation.
According to our experience, each patient will have their own unique response to TMS therapy. The average is however 10 to 20 sessions for a person’s symptoms, even though they may experience an improvement in their symptoms much earlier on.
How successful is TMS?
MS is a safe and effective innovative therapy to treat brain-based conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, stroke, dementia and depression. According to Harvard Medical School, 50-60% of people reported having meaningful progress after receiving TMS. One-third of the number even experienced the full remission of the symptoms. Moreover, for stroke patients at Baanlalisa, TMS is most effective when applied together with regular physical therapy. Although the results may vary depending on each individual, most clients have performed the improvements after receiving rTMS.
